Caracas weather is largely of the tropical savanna variation, with strong inter-tropical influences and a some what spring-like feel. Despite lying within the tropics, it is also situated at a considerably high altitude of 900 meters above sea level, making weather in Caracas distinguishable by the lower temperature levels it experiences in comparison to other tropical locations at sea level.
Contained entirely within a valley of the country’s central range, Caracas weather and its little variations between summer and winter temperatures is considered by many to be the best feature of the Venezuela’s capital and biggest city. Mildly put, weather in Caracas – never too old, equally rarely too hot – ranks amongst the top reasons that attract foreign visitors to the city, especially when one takes into account its reputation of having the highest per capita homicide rate in the word.
Annual average temperatures remain roughly around the 21°C. January is the coldest month of the year with an average of 19°C and May the warmest, although with a little annual thermal amplitude of 3°C the difference is hardly noticeable. Known by natives of Caracas as the Pacheco, a sudden drop in nighttime temperatures –often plummeting to 7 °C and in some cases, even less – entraps the city in its cold embrace, often followed with abundant fog that covers the landscape in its thick layers. However, Caracas weather patterns are also typified by the very pleasant evening temperatures the city experiences, which at any given time of the year do not veer above 20 °C.
Built with in the parameters of a closed valley, Caracas experiences frequent attacks by electrical storms especially between June and October. On the other hand, although rarely making an appearance hailstorms are certainly an eventuality.
Rainfalls are heavier and more frequent during October, March being the driest month of the year. Caracas’s weather is subject to 135 days of precipitation per year with humidity levels hovering around 80 % annually. Weather in Caracas is also notable for the average of 2688 sunlight hours it enjoys per year which amounts to 7.36 hours per day. May experiences the least sunlit hours (6.4 per day) and February the longest (8.7 per day).
